The Data Protection Act 1998 provides a legal framework under which public CCTV systems must operate. The Exeter system is controlled jointly by Devon County Council, Exeter City Council and the Police, who have produced a Code of Practice (available from Council Offices and the Central Library) under which the system must operate.
This Code of Practice identifies issues such as who may have access to the Control Room and guidelines for the operators to ensure that the individual’s privacy is respected.
